Spay’sTheWay is the Lexington Humane Society’s free and low-cost spay/neuter program for qualifying pet owners. In just over 6 years, we’ve provided over 11,500 surgeries through the program. Our goal is to provide 3,000 additional Spay’sTheWay surgeries every year.
Program Mission
To compassionately end pet overpopulation through education and accessible pet spaying and neutering.
Program Details
Pet owners must be over 18 years of age to qualify. We will spay/neuter up to four dogs/cats per pet owner each year; if you have more than four needing surgery, we will discuss other opportunities with you. Assistance is based on household income and financial assets. Depending on the level of assistance you qualify for, proof of income and/or Lexington residence may be required. Five levels of assistance are available.
Included with each surgery are rabies vaccination and city animal license—the two legal requirements for owning a dog or cat in Fayette County.

- Make sure pets meet all legal requirements: license and vaccinate for rabies every 12 months—license and rabies tags must be worn at all times
- Take pets to the vet for a check-up every year and vaccinate annually
- Feed nutritious food and provide fresh water everyday
- Microchip pets—microchips are permanent identification
- Obedience and leash train pets
