snowflake_clip_art_02Keep your pet safe and warm this winter!

Following are suggestions on how to keep your four-legged friend safe during these cold winter months:

  • Do not leave dogs or cats outdoors when the temperature sharply drops.  When the temperature is below freezing it is best to keep your pet indoors.
  • Outdoor pets need more food in the winter because keeping warm depletes energy.
  • Outdoor pets must have a dry draft free house.  Keep the home a few inches off the ground and out of the direction of the wind.
  • Check water dishes regularly to make sure water is fresh and unfrozen.  Do NOT use a stainless steel water bowl outside as the water will freeze quickly.
  • Salt and chemicals used to melt snow and ice burn the pads of your pets' feet.  Wipe pads of feet with a damp towel before animals lick them and burn their mouths.
  • Antifreeze is a deadly poison to pets.  Store and keep out of reach.
  • Bang on the hood before starting the engine of your car as warm engines in parked cars attract cats.
