Every day it is the mission of the Lexington Humane Society (LHS) to provide a safe, warm, loving place for the homeless animals in our community—to provide hope for animals in what would otherwise be hopeless situations.
But caring for over 5,000 homeless animals each year is only one part of our mission and purpose. To end pet homelessness in our community takes a full spectrum approach. Encouraging adoption as the best option when selecting a pet, promoting the importance of spay/neuter to prevent unwanted litters, and educating owners on responsible, life-long pet ownership—we work hard every day of the year to better the lives of animals.
Sadly, despite all of our hard work, we expect this new year to be as challenging as last year due to the large number of unwanted animals arriving at LHS each day, the increased cost of care for each animal, and slow adoption rates due to the economy. But regardless of the challenges, our caring staff and wonderful volunteers will be here to continue to Give Love, Teach Love, and Adopt Love this and every year until there are no more unwanted animals.
Can we count on you to partner with us in 2012?
We depend on the generosity of concerned members of our community to fund our life-saving work and vital programs. Programs dedicated to helping us achieve our mission include:
- Canine Companions Program, where we partner with local correctional facilities to help train our good dogs and make them great dogs.
- Project Purrfect, which is focused on feline health, welfare, and adoption.
- Second Chances, which provides extra resources for extreme medical situations.
- And, of course, our public Adoption and Spay’sTheWay spay/neuter programs.
Through these programs, beautiful animals like Maple are provided a new “leash” on life. Maple was discovered by a Good Samaritan as she was dangling from a tree by her hind leg. Somehow her leash had become wrapped around a branch, and in an effort to free herself, she tangled her leg in her leash. She was immediately seen by our LHS medical team and their efforts allowed her life and her leg to be saved. With lots of love, attention, and medical treatment funded by our Second Chances program, Maple grew healthy and strong in no time. But once she was back on all fours, it became clear she was lacking in socialization and training. Thanks to our Canine Companions Program, she is now receiving the basic training she needs to properly acclimate to a loving home.
This is just one example of how our programs save lives—all thanks to your support.
There are thousands of uplifting stories and happy endings I could share with you—each story possible because of friends like you. Together we can continue to accomplish great things in 2012. I hope we can count on you to partner with us in the new year.
